Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: Is it all right for Christians read Harry Potter books?

Answer: The answer is yes and no. It probably poses no harm to mature, discerning Christian teenagers and adults to read Harry Potter books. But, it is not advisable for Christian children (eleven years and below) who are probably more impressionable and less discerning to read Harry Potter books. Nevertheless, if they choose to do so, Christian parents and educators are strongly encouraged to read along with their children, and discuss the issues and fantasy elements presented in the books. It is an excellent opportunity for Christian parents and educators to teach the children about discernment and the dangers of witchcraft and the occult. It is also a good springboard for discussion with older children or young teens about New Age, witchcraft, and the occult. In reality, it is impossible to prevent all of our children from reading books, watching television shows, or visiting websites which promote witchcraft and the occult. However, there are two things Christian parents and educators can do:

  • Pray that our children will have the wisdom and discernment.

  • Equip and teach our children adequate biblical foundation to enable them to judge and filter for themselves the values they input.

Harry Potter fans may wonder why QKAG finds Harry Potter books objectionable when they are just harmless fantasy children books which promote values of friendship, loyalty and courage? The answer lies with the fantasy world of witchcraft, spells and curses which Harry Potter books are built on. Harry Potter books portray witchcraft as fun, exciting and wonderful. A child after reading Harry Potter books may think that witchcraft is harmless and fun when they are not. Harry Potter books may arouse the curiosity of the child to explore further and even dabble in harmful witchcraft practices, such as Ouija Board, seance sessions, voodoo dolls, casting spells and curses. Satan is not stupid (Genesis 3:1-5). With so much satanic influence in the world today, wouldn't it be to his gain for him to exploit Harry Pottermania? Do not be deceived, a man reaps what he sows (Galatians 6:7). When you feed on witchcraft, you will reap its negative effects! Related topic in Issues # 17, 59, 64, 84.
