Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: What is the Sabbath?

Answer: According to the Old Testament in the Bible, the Sabbath is a holy day for the Jews and their households to strop their work and rest (Exodus 20:8-10; Deuteronomy 5:12-15). On the Sabbath, the Jews were not allowed to light any fire for cooking (Exodus 35:3), do farm work (Leviticus 25:4-5), gather wood (Numbers 15:32-26), carry heavy loads (Jeremiah 17:21-27), do marketing (Nehemiah 10:31), or even travel (Exodus 16:29). The penalty for breaking the Sabbath is very serious - death (Exodus 31:15). On the Sabbath, the Jews were expected to consecrate or dedicate themselves to God and pursue spiritual activities such as coming together to pray and hear God's Word (Leviticus 23:3; Numbers 28:9-10; Acts 1:12-14; 13:14-15, 27, 44; 16:13). In the next issue, QKAG will explore the issue of the Sabbath for Christians.
