Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: What is the Great Commission?

Answer: The Great Commission is to preach the good news (Gospel) that Jesus Christ has died on the cross for our sins and anyone who believes in Him will be saved (Mark 16:15-16). If we hear the news of a great sale at a popular store or a restaurant is giving away free dessert, this is considered good news and we want to tell as many people as possible about it. Likewise, we, Christians, having been saved by Jesus, how much more should we tell our relatives, friends, colleagues, and the people we meet of this very good news which can make a difference between someone going to heaven or hell. In Mark 16:15-16 or Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus did not ask us to preach the good news but He commands us to do it. Therefore, we must obey the Great Commission and tell as many people as possible about the good news. However, it is important to remember that our job is to preach and NOT convert. The job of converting someone lies with God Himself (1 Corinthians 3:6; Acts 9:3-9, 16:14; John 16:7-9). God always works in partnership with us as His messengers of the good news so as to bring the people into His kingdom. Like what Paul had said in 1 Corinthians 3:6, we plant the seed (preach the good news) and God makes it grow (convert the sinners). Related topic in Issues # 45, 46, 57.
