Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: What should I look for in a good church?

Answer: First, you should determine that the church is not a cult by consulting with Watchman Fellowship (Issue # 44). Second, you may evaluate a church by visiting its Sunday services and talking to its members. You should keep the following attributes in mind when evaluating a church:
1. A good church loves God (
Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37). This love is displayed through the love of the church members for one another and to those outside the church - the sinners, lost, sick, poor and outcasts (John 13:35; 1 Thessalonians 4:9; 1 John 4:19-21, 5:1-3). Related topic in Issue # 29.
2. A good church is grounded in the Word of God - the Holy Bible (
John 8:31; Revelation 3:8, 10). The church doctrines and teachings should be biblical (Galatians 1:8; 2 Peter 3:16; Revelation 22:18-19).
3. A good church lives according to the Holy Spirit and bears His fruit of love, joy, peace, etc. (
Galatians 5:16-23; Colossians 1:10). Related topic in Issue # 52 & 53.
4. A good church is the dwelling place of God (
Ephesians 2:20-22; 1 Corinthians 3:16).

Prayer for those searching for a church:
Dear Lord Jesus, please give me the wisdom and discernment to find a good church which I can grow as a Christian. Thank You, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Prayer for those already in a church:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for (name of your church). Please help us to love You more and more, and the people outside the church who need You. Please help us to be obedient to Your Word and protect us from any false teaching. Please send Your Holy Spirit to teach, guide and empower us to be the church of the living God. Amen.

Last words...
"You will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. (1 Timothy 3:15)"
