Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: If God wants us to love Him, how come He wants us to fear Him as well (Deuteronomy 10:12)?

Answer: First, God wants us to fear Him because He is the God Almighty, Creator of all (Isaiah 8:13; Malachi 1:6). Second, God wants us to fear Him so that we will not do evil and be condemned. This fear is not a scary type of fear but a deep sense of awe and respect for God (Ecclesiastes 5:7). God wants us to respect and revere Him so that we will live a life which strives to please Him (Proverbs 3:7, 8:13). For example, a student who respects his teacher would want to please the teacher by being obedient and helpful. Likewise, a person who fears God would choose to live a life which pleases God by obeying His commandments and doing good. On the other hand, a person who does not fear God would live a life of sin and rebellion against God (Proverbs 24:21). In the end, this person will be condemned by his or her sins (Romans 6:23). It is important to remember that even though God is a God of love, He is also a just and holy God who will punish those who sin against Him (Isaiah 13:11). Therefore, let us fear God and seek His mercy and forgiveness.

Key Bible verses:

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, please forgive me when I have failed to give You the due respect and reverence. Please put a godly fear in my heart so that I will shun evil and choose to live a life of holiness. Thank You, Lord Jesus. Amen.
