Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: What is deception and how do I protect myself from it?

Answer: Deception is to make people believe in a lie. In the history of the church, many false teachers came to deceive the Christians. For example, some Christians in Galatia were deceived in thinking that they must obey the Law of Moses for salvation (Galatians 1:7). Thankfully, we can protect ourselves from deception by studying God's Word (Acts 17:11). When we study God's Word, we will know God's will and commandments. As such, we can see through the lies of Satan and his false teachers if they tell us to act against God's will and commandments. However, knowing God's Word is not enough. We must also trust and obey God's Word (Luke 11:28). In Genesis 3, Eve knew God's commandment not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but she chose not to obey God's Word. We can also protect ourselves by praying to God for wisdom and protection (Psalm 40:11; James 1:5). Whenever I visit new churches or attend Christian conferences, I always ask God to give me wisdom and protect me from deception. I know God will protect me because the Holy Spirit who is in me is greater than Satan and will teach me the truth (John 16:13; 1 John 4:4). Whenever I feel uneasy after or while hearing a sermon or teaching, I know that God is telling me to be careful and alert. Most of the time, God is warning me not to believe in the deception.
