| PAST ISSUE # 87 Questions Kids Ask About God Question: My parents are not Christians, do I still have to honour them as commanded by God in Exodus 20:12? Answer: Yes, we must honour our parents regardless of their beliefs and values. We honour them by loving and respecting them. We submit to their authority because they are our parents. However, if our non-Christian parents tell us to do something which is against God's commandments, we should tell them with love and gentleness that it is against our beliefs (1 Peter 3:15). When we honour our parents, they will see that Christians are loving and respectful to their elders. They will be pleased with us and may even want to know Jesus because of our loving attitudes towards them. Key Bible verses: Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9; Deuteronomy 5:16; Ephesians 6:1-3; Colossians 3:20; 1 Timothy 5:4 Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I want to thank You for giving me caring and loving parents. Please forgive me for not honouring and appreciating them enough. I know my parents are not perfect but they are special because You have given them to me. I ask that You bless and protect my parents. Please give me the wisdom and courage to tell my parents about You. And I pray that they may come to know You and invite You as their personal Lord and Saviour. Amen. Last words... "Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you." (Deuteronomy 5:16) Next |
